Refrigerated trailers are used for a variety of different purposes, and can be customised to meet the specific needs of a customer.

Some common uses include transporting food and other perishables, such as flowers,; transporting medical supplies and equipment;, and providing temporary refrigeration at construction or event sites. During these events, such as fairs and carnivals, refrigerated trailers can be set up to provide temporary cold storage for food and drinks, or to store ice cream and other frozen treats.

Refrigerated trailers may even be used to transport live animals across the country, keeping them at safe temperatures for stress-free transit.

The temperature of refrigerated trailers can be adjusted depending on the cargo inside; it is important to remember this does not just mean cooling products, but maintaining them at a desired temperature for the length of their journey.

Generally, refrigerated trailers can fulfil a temperature range between -65 and 40 degrees Celsuis. This is enough to counteract external temperatures and maintain stock at the correct temperature. Smaller refrigerated trailers may not have the same range, however.

Refrigerated trailers work by using a refrigeration unit to keep the trailer at a low temperature. This is done by using a compressor, condenser, and evaporator coil. The compressor circulates the refrigerant through the system, and the condenser dissipates heat from the refrigerant. The evaporator coil then cools the air, which is circulated throughout the trailer. The trailer maintains temperatures through insulated walls.

The refrigeration unit on a refrigerated trailer today runs separately from the vehicle itself; the refrigeration unit is powered by electric or battery, or occasionally diesel, if an older model.
