    Trams

    MCRS can cold roll form and press both ferrous and non-ferrous, coated, and high strength metallic materials; material choice will be deduced by initial design consultations headed by a collaboration between MCRS’ dedicated design engineers and clients’ development teams.

    Lead times for tram componentry and sections will vary, though MCRS endeavours to respect client project timescales where possible.

    What’s the difference between a tram and a light rail?

    The terms light rail and tram can often be used interchangeably, since there is an overlap in their definitions. Light rail, also known as light rail transit (LRT), refers to a lighter railway system – one that does not have the same capacity as a traditional railway; this, of course, includes trams, as well as metros. However, the term tram is associated with operation along public streets (usually within a city), to which the term light rail is not restricted.

    What are the advantages of using trams?

    Tram lines are a reliable and cost effective way to transport people around a city. They have a great capacity and can carry a high volume of people, whilst remaining reliable and efficient - ideal for commuters. Because of this, trams often reduce the build up of traffic within a city, especially around rush hour, freeing up road space.

    This is particularly beneficial for the environment; often operating on electricity, trams do not emit any harmful gases into the atmosphere and can carry more people in one run than cars.

    Moreover, trams contribute to the versatility and attraction of a city as it allows the city to be easily and quickly navigated by both citizens and tourists, offering more stops than a train and quicker routes than a bus. Trams are quiet, run smoothly, and do not take up much room within a city’s infrastructure - therefore do not detract from a city’s existing attraction.

    Finally, trams and other forms of light rail systems are cheaper to install than heavy rail alternatives, making them a great investment.

    How many trams are there in the UK?

    Though the existence of tramways within the UK has declined in recent years, there currently stands eight tramways and light rail systems throughout the UK. Appearing in some of the biggest cities, such as London, Edinburgh, and Birmingham, trams continue to provide an essential service to many in the UK. These trams all operate through electricity.
